4 February 2024 Napier to Wellington North Island NZ

Kids playing behind the motor home woke us early. We were not in a hurry to get on the road. We decided to head for some wineries near Martinborough on the way to Wellington. We knew that we will be back in Napier on the cruise ship and have a wine tour scheduled for that port of call. So, we knew we would be back to enjoy Napier. Prior to leaving the park, we decided to stop at the dump station to empty the grey tank, bathroom cartridge and fill up the fresh water tank. Dumping the grey tank is similar to what we do on the Wanderer, just a different way to connect the hose. The bathroom cartridge is a whole different animal. You pull the small tank out of the motor home, swivel a short tube out, unscrew the cap, press a pressure relieve valve, and poor the contents out of the tank into a “glory hole”. It is a lot smellier than the way we do it at home. Next, David pulled the fresh water hose supplied by the RV company and connected it to the fresh water spigot, rather than use the hose that was there, in the belief that it is probably cleaner than the one provided by the park after observing previous behaviors of RVers at the dump stations. It was about a three hour drive from Napier to Martinborough. The main roads in New Zealand are two lane and kind of like US Highways. They go through small towns with lots of speed limit changes, stop lights, traffic circles and very windy with a lot of curves that require you to slow down for. US style freeways are only in the major cities. So, it takes longer to go a short distance than we are used to. But the wind was calm in the morning before picking up later in the day. The GPS took us through some beautiful New Zealand back roads.  In Martinborough, we visited the Moy Hill Winery for a tasting and left there with a Sauvignon Blanc that was very nice and a very peppery Pino Noir. We then went up to Luna Winery for a tasting. We got there just before they closed. We enjoyed our time there and left with three bottles, a Syrah, Pino Noir, and a Rose. Seems New Zealand does have some good reds! We then headed for Wellington. We had to cross over the mountains on a very narrow and winding road that tested David’s large vehicle driving skills. It reminded him of Topanga Canyon in California. We are staying in Wellington TOP 10 RV Park.
