We woke this morning to sunshine!!! Such a wonderful thing after days of drenching rain! Also found a dozen or so itchy bites from the notorious Sand Fleas! After breakfast, we drove back down to the head of the sound to get some pictures of Milford Sound in the sunshine. Gone were the thousands of waterfalls to be replaced with stark rock. We then headed back toward Te Anau. We made a detour up Lower Hollyford Road until it ended at the trail head for Humboldt Falls. We researched the hike to the Humboldt Falls Overlook and decided to not do that trail since it was likely very muddy from yesterday’s storms and the view point is so far away from the falls to almost not be useful along with trees blocking the view. But we drove the road and stopped at Moraine Creek where there was a cable bridge over the water. Leslie was not about to walk out on that little bridge, but David took it all the way across and back. We made a couple of stops along the way to get pictures of the mountains that had been obscured by clouds on our way in. We then sought out the visitor center for Fiordland National Park in Te Anau. We were disappointed to find they did not have any tee shirts or hats for Milford Sound or Fiordland National Park. They had a park movie that we were able to watch, but no park stamp. After making our way back to Te Anau TOP 10 Holiday Park and setting up our site, we again walked into the downtown area. We went back through the shops looking for either Milford Sound or Fiordland National Park tee shirts and did not find any. What a missed marketing opportunity! Perhaps we will find some in Queenstown or Christ Church. So, we ended up back at The Ranch to drowned our sorrows in Guinness and Rose Wine!
