20-21 February 2024 Christchurch, South Island NZ

Ahh the pleasure of sleeping in a proper bed without it moving under you and your feet not hanging off the end! Needless to say, we slept in late! We went across the street to a pub for lunch. The wind was still blowing! We spent the afternoon catching up on stuff for the cruise (early check in) and binge watching TV since we had gone without for three weeks. That evening we found an Asian Fusion restaurant and enjoyed some wonderful Thai food. Next day we decided to take the Tram Tour of Christchurch. Christchurch was settled in 1850. The city was designed before they even left England. They had to drain a large swamp which is what they built the city on top of. When the four earthquakes hit between September 2010 and March 2011, the ground under the city liquefied. Ninety Percent of the downtown area was destroyed or damaged beyond repair. In the outlying areas, 10,000 homes were destroyed and over 100,000 damaged. Two hundred and eighteen people lost their lives over the period. So, the downtown area of Christchurch is in the process of being rebuilt and repaired. They have reimagined the city and are putting in more parks, pedestrian zones and a wonderful market area along the Avon River. The electric trams running through downtown for 40km are all over 90 years old. The tram drivers provided a historical description as we drove through the city center. Again we looked for Milford tee shirts and did not find anything. Guess we will have to order them from Amazon.
