3 March 2024 Tourist Route #9

We made a wonderful breakfast from our breakfast box. We had noticed on the way into town that there was a marked tourist route that went along the coastal highway through several small towns and national parks. We also saw on the map that it looked like we could drive to the top of Mt. Gulaga/Dromedary. So, we decided to go explore! We headed toward the tiny hamlet of Tilba Tilba and followed the Apple maps to turn off for the mountain. As we headed toward the turnoff, we could see that the top of the mountain was covered by clouds, so we were not hopeful we would have a good view from the top. The road went from pavement, to gravel, to dirt and then just a couple of dirt ruts. Eventually, we came to a sign that indicated only hikers beyond that point. So, we turned around and headed back down, not feeling like a 3.5 mile hike into the clouds. We returned to the princess highway and found the start of Tourist Route #9. The route took us along the Sapphire Coast, through the towns of Wallaga Lake, Bermagui, Cuttagee, Barragga Bay, Tathra, Tura Beach, Merimbula before dropping us back on the Princess Highway. This route also took us through Wallaga Lake National Park, Mimosa Rocks National Park and Bournda National Park. On the way back, we drove into the town of Tilba and stopped at the Dromedary Hotel. There we listen to a local musician in the beer garden until dinner service was available and then had dinner.
