24 March 2023 Indian Head

We needed a break from working on Ricks ranch, so the three of us went for a hike in Big Bend National Park. Leslie and David had never done this particular hike since you have to enter the west side of the park from a dirt road that started in Study Butte. The road had dried out so we felt it would be a good day to go. There are wonderful views of the Chisos (all the snow is now melted off) from the trail and several wonderful petroglyph panels on the huge volcanic boulders. The Indian Head Trail (1.85 miles, 79ft elevation gain, 845 calories burned) starts at the park boundary fence and descends into a wide dry wash and runs long the bottom of a large volcanic ridge with huge volcanic boulders. The petroglyphs are pretty spread out and faded. We could also see graffiti on some of the panel that was dated 1902 (before the park existed). It was great to get out and stretch our legs with Rick as our guide.  After our hike we decided to drive into the park to go to see Santa Elena Canyon. We wanted to see if the water flow was running higher with last weeks rain, but were disappointed to see the Rio Grande was still very low. So we will have to put our plans to float the canyon off to another trip.
