The drive west along I-40 is long and straight. There are some points where the scenery is beautiful but much of the drive is boring. We exited at Gallup and took US491 up to NM 264 west where it enters the Navajo Reservation and becomes AZ 264 at the border. AZ 264 climbs up onto the Defiance Mesa before dropping down to intersect US191 at Ganado. Then it is a short drive to Chinle at the entrance to Canyon de Chelly NM. We are staying in the NM at Cottonwood Campground ($20 per night, cash only). The NPS run campground has no RV hookups but does have a water filling station and a dump station. So we pulled around to the water filling station to fill up our fresh water tank for our 5 day stay. The water filling station had a nozzle for filling up water bottles, but no hose connection for filling up RV tanks. After talking to a ranger and getting permission, David got out his tools and took apart the nozzle so we could hook up our water hose (several other people did the same over the next several days) and fill up our 107 gallon tank. While we waited for the tank to fill, Leslie walked around to scope out possible sites big enough for the Wanderer. We tried one pull through but could not negotiate the turn into the site due to a tree at the edge of the road. So we ended up taking a large back in site near the dump station. With no electricity, we are running off the house batteries and the solar system. Its funny how you get spoiled by simple things like the microwave or the electric leg extensions on the love seat until you don’t have them! The park has no WiFi and we were surprised to find out there was no Verizon coverage so we could not use our hotspot. Luckily we did have a few bars of AT&T LTE coverage. The Goatheads in this park are terrible! They even embed themselves into the soles of our shoes. We feel sorry for the poor dogs the other campers have brought here.
