7-10 July 2022 Etta Emergency

Etta seemed to be fine Thursday and was still passing bits and pieces of corn cob. Friday, David took the truck in to get an alignment, two new tires ($1123) and to give it a good washing. While he was out, Leslie saw that Etta and vomited a couple of times while she was in the shower. David was in the middle of washing the truck when Leslie called, so he rushed back and we grabbed Etta to head for an emergency 24 hour vet hospital. The nearest 24 hour vet told us they did not have a surgeon and recommended we go to the Upstate Veterinarian Clinic which was 46 miles away. We rushed her down and checked in. While we waited, Etta vomited twice more. It took five hours before they took her back for x-rays. While we sat in the waiting room, emergency after emergency came in. It was every bit as busy as a human ER. They brought us back and told us they could see a shadow of a foreign object in her intestines, but could not tell if it was in the small intestine or colon. But that it did not seem to be fully blocking the intestine. So, we agreed to leave her there overnight while they gave her intervenes fluids. X-rays the next morning showed the foreign object had not moved. So, they continued the intervenes fluids, monitored her blood sugar and gave her medicines (Pain killers, anti-nausea, etc) all day Saturday and into Sunday. Sunday morning they took another set of x-rays and the foreign object had moved into the colon and later that morning she pooped out a big chunk of corn cob. Whew, that was close. We had spent time on Saturday trying to decide if we should put her through a surgery or to put her down given all he other medical issues. We were VERY relieved to hear she was in the clear and we could bring her home to the Wanderer! So, $4100 later in vet bills, the corn cob was gone. That dog has the most remarkable digestive system that we have ever heard of. Saturday was also Veronica’s 85th birthday. Unfortunately, we missed the Birthday party at Pappa Bears with the family, but we had a good celebratory dinner with her before we pulled out of Canton. With Etta home, and the truck fixed, we are finally able to explore the local area.
