2 July 2022 Adirondack State Park

Having heard of the beauty of the Adirondack Mountains for years, we were anxious to see for ourselves. The park is over 6 million acres from north of Albany NY all the way to the Canadian border. But as we researched the park, we were surprised that there were very few hiking trails and no park visitor center. So we decided to drive to Indian Lake in the heart of the park. We were surprised to see much of the property along the roads is privately owned. We took several side roads to some of the 9000 lakes/ponds in the park and were surprised to see most of the property along the lakeshores were also privately owned for lake houses or private resorts. The few campgrounds along the shore were of course packed with campers being 4th of July weekend. We only found two overlooks during our drive. But when we dis stop at the overlooks, the low mountains were pretty. Having spent the last two years exploring the mountains of the west, these mountains were not very impressive. The areas along the road are heavily forested so you really could not see much from the roads. At Indian Lake, we headed back to the campground by a different route through the towns of Inlet and Old Forge which were teaming with vacationers. In Inlet, we stopped at a pub and enjoyed a beer, at the Screamen Eagle Pub. After we returned to the campground we got some firewood and started a nice campfire while enjoying the cool temperatures. Gary, the owner, stopped by and chatted with us for quite a while. He is a former sea captain, so he has seen a lot of the ports along the US coast. This area gets over 138 inches of snow a year with temperatures well below zero. He and Anne go to Florida for the winter where they have an RV parked in a RV Port. Interesting guy to talk too.
