Our first visit to Zion gave us an appetite for more. So we went back today to hike the Emerald Pools trail. The normal starting point for this trail is at the Zion Lodge, but the bridge over the Virgin River was damaged this spring and is closed. So, we took the bus to the Grotto and hiked up Kayenta Trail (3.3 miles and 629 feet of elevation gain) from there. The trail is narrow with big drop offs, and there was a lot of people on the trail, not Leslie’s favorite kind of trail. We all hiked up to the middle pool where Leslie decided she needed to rest her ankle. Bill and David continued up to the Upper Pool. The trail up to the Upper Pool was very steep and technical. Bill fell on the way down and bruised his hand. Once back to the middle pool, David and Leslie headed back to the trail head while Bill decided to go to the lower pool and meet us at the trail head. The views down the canyon from the trail were incredible. The pools themselves were pretty but there were just too many people to really enjoy them. After our hike we headed back into Springdale for lunch before heading for home.
