5 June 2023 Sand Dune Arch

Leslie and Pam were not feeling like getting out and about, so Bill and David headed out to find the Sand Dune Arch north of Kanab. The unimproved roads are mostly a fine, powdery sand which does get deep in places. After a bit of searching on the sandy BLM roads, they found the HooDoo referenced in the literature and drove on down to the Arch. It’s a small arch compared to others in Utah, but it’s interesting since it is made of much harder volcanic looking rock than the surrounding soft sandstone. The cap on the HooDoo was of similar stone. The layers in the HooDoo indicate this area had fractured multiple times through the millennia. We then drove back into town to meet up with Pam to tour the Kanab Museum only to find out it was closed for renovations. So, Bill and David went down to the Heritage house, the oldest building in the town. Built in the 1890s, we enjoyed the tour and seeing the craftsmanship of the carpenters in the 1890s. The house had fallen into disrepair in the 1960s, but was bought by the town and restored in the 1970s. It really is a tribute to the builders of the early settlers to this area. Later in the afternoon we walked over to Bill and Pam’s RV for Pam’s Birthday party. Since all the nice restaurants in town were closed on Mondays, we settled for pizza and cake.
