2 August 2023 Theodore Roosevelt NP – North Unit

The drive from Medora to the entrance for the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt NP is about 62 miles through the high prairies of North Dakota. At the visitor center for the north unit, we picked up our passport stamps and a few more post cards. We drove the 14 mile out and back scenic drive through the park, stopping at the various overlooks. The views from the top of the bluffs down into the Little Missouri River (also called the Little Muddy) were beautiful. We think that the scenery in the northern unit was nicer than the southern unit. But, we only saw one herd of bison off in the distance.

On the way back to the Wanderer, we received an email telling us we had received tickets for tonight’s showing of the Medora Musical. We were a little doubtful of the weather as there were showers starting to pop up in the area. But it all cleared out by the time the show started. The Musical was a fun history of the area, including Teddy Roosevelt’s roll in the preservation of the area. It was a fun show but we agree that it is not as spectacular as the Paloduro Canyon Texas Musical.
