We vowed to get out of the house today. We drove down to Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home in the early afternoon. We toured the grounds and the house. They are in the process of restoring the siding on the rear of the house. Interestingly, although the house looks like it is built of stone, it is actually wooden planks carved to look like stone blocks with paint and sand to make it look like stone blocks. The view from the back of the house over the Potomac River is wonderful. We wandered down to the tomb of George and Martha Washington, but it was undergoing restoration (Tuck Pointing of the brick) as well. We then drove through Alexandria and found the house where Leslie rented the basement apartment back in the 1980s. We then headed into town to the Prime Rib restaurant where Leslie bought David a fantastic Birthday Dinner. The Wanderer just seems so empty when we get home now.
