10 October 2019 Cannery Row, Monterey

Being so close to Monterey, we figured we had to go to the Aquarium. We parked just off Cannery Row, where they used to can the Anchovies catch in the 1930s and early 40s before the Anchovies stock crashed from over fishing.  The old cannery buildings have been turned into shops and restaurants. We had lunch at the Fish Hopper with beautiful views of Monterey Bay and then explored the Monterey Aquarium. The Aquarium was spectacular. We enjoyed watching the Sea Otters play and were captivated by the various squids and jelly fish. We followed the Aquarium up with another wine tasting. This one was Bargetto. They source all their grapes from the Santa Cruz Mountains/Santa Lucia Highlands area of California. While sampling our wines, we met a lady who is 67 years old and a Lt. Col in the Air Force. She joined the Air Force immediately after 911 at age 50. She had some helpful ideas for David’s nephew on a career path to becoming a flight surgeon. We wished we could have stayed longer, but we needed to leave to make our evening plans. We went to the local Pacific Repertory Theatre’s rendition of Shakespeare in Love in the historic Forrest Theater. We arrived early to get good seats and brought a picnic dinner composed of the cheeses and meats we had picked up in Carmel. The show was well done and we enjoyed a romantic evening to ourselves.
