30 May 2021 Drive to Lake Powell

We had planned to hike Horseshoe Canyon today, but when we check the weather we found there were some serious storms near the canyon. We did not want to chance the 30 mile dirt road, which reportedly becomes impassable when wet, or a flash flood in the canyon. So we drove down the Utah Bicentennial Highway to Lake Powell. It brought us to the opposite end of the bridge from where we had stopped previously. We did not cross the bridge after hearing the groans and pops as other vehicles crossed it. The storms were building all around us and the wind was whipping as we headed back. On the way back, we diverted down Bull Creek Scenic Highway to the Bullfrog Visitor center for Glen Canyon Recreation Area. We stopped in to inquire about boat rentals and David found out that the lake is 140 feet down from its last peak (in 2017) and that they may have to stop running the hydro generators in the dam if the water drops another 50 feet. We drove down the Marina, but the wind was blowing so hard it was picking up sand and blasting the truck with it. But we could finally see water for Lake Powell! Not wanting to get out of the truck, we turned around and headed for the Wanderer. We only got rained on a bit on the drive back. Most of the precipitation was in the higher elevations.

Bridge over the Colorado River. We were at the other end of the bridge back in April

Looking down at Hite, there should be 30 feet of water here

This whole area should be under water
