After being cooped up in the Wanderer and truck, we were in need of exercise and fresh air. Even Etta was eager to get out. We drove up to Davis Mountains State Park and hiked the Old CCC trail, which is the old road the CCC built back in the 1930s up to an overlook. It intersects the Sky Line Trail near the top of the bluff. The Sky Line Trail runs parallel to the Sky Line Drive road before dropping down the back side of the hill to the camp ground. It’s a 3.5 mile loop with a lot of climbing. By the time we got to the highest point, Leslie’s legs were feeling a bit wobbly so she did not want to go down the steep trail back down, risking another slip with her knee, so she walked down the road with Etta while David went down the rest of the trail. It was a good thing Leslie decided not to take the trail because it was steep and really rocky. David went into “power hiking mode”. We got back to the truck about the same time and were very happy to settle into the comfortable leather seats! Even Etta was happy to be back in her doggy seat. It was a good hike and we were feeling it. Once back at the Wanderer, it was anti inflamatories for all 3 of us! We need to do more hikes like this to prepare for the big hikes coming up this summer. David knew this because on the 6thor 7thincline up the mountain trail, Leslie bent over her knees, breathing hard and said, “Go on…..really……save yourself! I’ll be there eventually. Feel free to order my dinner for me”.
