27 February 2019 Exploring Lake Amistad

We had planned to go Kayaking on the Pecos River where it joined the Rio Grand today but woke up to foggy cool weather. So we waited for the fog to break. With the clouds hanging low, we decided to call off the kayaking and instead explore the lake shore. We stopped at the visitor center for the Amistad National Recreation Area and talked to the Ranger. The lake water tempurature was in the fifties which would have made for a very cold dunk if one of us had tipped over (David has a habit of doing that). Combined with the cool air tempuratures, high winds and waves, we had experienced the previous several days, it would have been a cold surprise. In addition, most of the lake along the Rio Grand is surrounded by cliffs 100 feet or higher with no beaches to pull out on. So we drove to several of the boat launches that Leslie remembered. As we drove around, the lake it became clear the lake is much lower than Leslie remembered, up to 30 feet lower, from the 1990s. Where the rivers (Pecos and Devils) merge into the Rio Grand, it was very shallow and muddy. So the only place to really Kayak would have been on the lake. As the day wore on, the sun came out, the tempuratures climbed and the wind died. So we missed out on some good conditions to Kayak the lake in the late afternoon.
