The rain moved in this morning and it rained off and on all day. We went to the Grand Tetons National Park Moose Visitor Center. We collected our 37thPassport Stamp, watched the park movie, and talked with the ranger to check on the best hiking trails. The Moose Visitor Center is huge and elaborate compared to most of the other visitor centers we have visited in other park units. Then we drove the inner park road north until the intersection with the Rockefeller Memorial Parkway. The clouds would alternately cover the mountains and then surround them like a halo. The rain came and went but there was a fairly stead drizzle all day.
The rock that the Tetons are formed from is 1.8 Billion years old and still rising. The valley runs right up to the base of the mountains with no foot hills. There is a fault line running along the base of the mountains that breaks loose every 1000 years (and were due). The valley is sinking and the Tetons are still going up (6-8 feet during previous earthquakes).
Critter Sightings: As we were driving along the inner park road, we saw a group of cars on the side of the road, so we pulled over and found that there was a large Black Bear eating! Our first black bear! Further along we saw a Cow Elk with two really new babies and along the Rockefeller parkway a group of buffalo.
