With only one day left here in Lemon Grove, we drove south to the southern portion of Giant Sequoia NM. This NM is run by the National Forest Service. The NM encompasses 33 Sequoia groves and was carved out of Sequoia National Forest in 1996 by President Clinton. We could not find a visitor center and the district ranger station was closed. So we made our way on the forest service roads, which were twisty and windy, to Trail of 100 Giants (2.1 Miles, 102 feet of elevation gain, 605 calories burned). This improved trail winds through a grove of over 700 sequoia trees of which over 100 are older than 1000 years. It was our last chance to enjoy see these ancient giants before heading for the deserts. We also rearranged our plans to fill the suddenly empty two weeks we were expecting to be in Palmdale by adding itinerary stops for Channel Islands NP and Cabrillo NM.
